Hot Swap Power Supplies for Redundant Servers
Hot swap power supplies are the best solution for ensuring that your redundant server stays powered on. Most redundant server chassis allow for two to three hot swap power supplies so they have failover protection. A hot swap power supply allows you to remove it while the dedicated server is still running, allowing you to replace a bad one without having to shutdown the web server. While most redundant servers can run on just one power supply it is highly recommend to have at least one additional one as backup.
Green Servers and Energy Efficient Server Power Supplies
While there is a strong movement towards Green Servers and green web hosting most current Server hardware requirements demand high current draws and therefore the power supplies will be more expensive. Keep in mind that as the motherboards change so do the connectors. For example you cannot use a server chassis from a PIII XEON server for building a dual quad core XEON system, since the power supplies in the older chassis will not meet the EPS12V requirements of the new motherboards also the connectors are not 24 pin plus the 4 pin CPU connectors.
EPS12V was designed by Server System Infrastructure Group, SSI for short, and has more stable current for mission critical servers. If you are building a workstation in a tower case you can find non-server power supplies in EPS12V as well.
the push to make green servers will have an impact on how manufacturers build their components,As we see more and more people switching to green web hosting we will see CPUs, Motherboards, and hard drives take up less current and reduce the overall wattage required to power a web server. As this happens we should see a shift in power supplies from high wattage to lower wattage green server power supplies and of course a larger number of green dedicated hosting services crop up.
